After a great month or so in Abu Dhabi, the UFC is moving away from the Middle East ahead of its next event.

UFC 251 was one of the biggest PPVs in UFC history as Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman fought for the Welterweight title.

There were two other title clashes before some Fight Night events. However, it is time to return to the States with some Fight Night events before UFC 252 comes calling.

Date and Location

The UFC is back in the United States for its next set of events. UFC Fight Night will take place at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. Fight Island was home to the UFC for a month or so, but this move will certainly help the fighters.

The events at Fight Island were shown on US prime time but the fights actually took place early in the morning locally.

UFC Fight Night 173 will take place on 1 August with the Preliminary card at 6PM ET. The main card is expected to start at 9PM ET.

The UFC is back in Las Vegas this weekend for tonight’s UFC on ESPN+ 31. The event takes place at UFC Apex.

The main event on the card is an intriguing one. In that contest, Derek Brunson faces Edmen Shahbazyan in what could be a coming-out party for Shahbazyan.

Shahbazyan is a rising 22-year-old, who has a perfect 11-0 record. Four of those victories have come with the UFC including his past three victories. Shahbazyan’s three recent wins have all come via first-round stoppage. Shahbazyan is the No. 9 ranked fighter in the official UFC middleweight rankings.

Brunson joined the UFC in 2012. At the time, Brunson had a 9-2 record. Today, the 36-year-old is 20-7. Brunson has only lost to fighters at the top of the 185-pound division: Israel Adesanya, Ronaldo Souza, Anderson Silva and Robert Whittaker. He is currently ranked No. 8 and on a two-fight winning streak.

With a win, Shahbazyan, who is managed by former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, could break into the top-five of the 185-pound division with a win over a veteran like Brunson.

If Brunson drops the fight to Shahbazyan, he could fall to gatekeeper status, which is a position a fighter who has been near the top of the division for a few years may to be happy to fill.

In the co-main event, Joanne Calderwood faces Jennifer Maia in the women’s flyweight division. Calderwood was in the running for a title shot, but with the champion, Valentina Shevchenko, dealing with an injury, Calderwood elected to step in to face Maia after Maia’s original opponent, Viviane Araujo tested positive for COVID-19.
